Throughout our #SMEsuccess campaign, we have focussed on the importance of industrial strategy and how SMEs have benefited from existing initiatives.
This week we focus on the value of good marketing and communications to SMEs. For many smaller businesses, these can be perceived as expensive and only for Primes; however a number of organisations work with SMEs and can deliver real results.

One such company is Cambridge based SME, Communicator Ltd. A multi-award-winning producer of promotional and communications videos, with ADS members both large and small as customers, including Primes such as BAE Systems, MBDA and QinetiQ, and innovative technology companies such as Blighter, Pearson, Plextek and Sepura.

With 30 years’ experience and a security-cleared supply-chain, Communicator Ltd, covers short-form exhibition videos for shows like DSEI, Farnborough International Airshow and Security & Policing, through to corporate overviews and internal communications. When filming is not viable, the company can craft compelling videos from a clients’ existing material.

As part of this experience, Communicator is aware of the barriers that face SMEs when it comes to planning and producing promotional material. For many businesses, marketing is seen as a key driver for business growth; enabling potential customers to know that a company and its products exist, however, budget, expertise and time are significant barriers.

Communicator’s Creative Director, Martin Collins, says:

“Marketing is an important tool to communicate a company’s brand; encompassing its capabilities as well as its values. Successfully marketing your company across chosen channels which target your audience or customer can build awareness and resonance, as well as increase business enquiries; visits to your website or other desired actions.

“Promotional video is just one tool amongst a variety of options, one that is often overlooked due to budget restrictions. With this in mind, on every project, for all clients, Communicator provides a free consultancy on a production of a creative brief. We then produce part of the video with no obligation, for internal review. The client can then see some of their video and amend their brief, before they spend any money”.

MBDA’s Head of Group Internal Communications, Alan Fuller, said:

“Having worked with Communicator for well over ten years they are very responsive to their clients’ needs. We have worked together as partners to deliver many successful videos, for both internal and external audiences, on as wide a range of budgets as you can imagine. It’s also been good to have won one or two awards along the way for the work we have delivered together!”

Peter Doig, Business Manager – Defence at Plextek, said:

“In addition to Communicator’s understanding of the nature of our business and our customers’ needs, the fact that we were able to see a section of the video, at no cost, before going ahead was a huge reassurance. This enabled us to sign off in confidence, knowing that they’d produce an extremely effective video for us.”
