The UK aerospace, defence, security and space sectors support over 1m jobs across the UK, providing high-wage and high skilled careers that boost local economies and communities. Our sectors rely on a wide range of skills from engineering and purchasing to marketing and IT.
Future skills in engineering will develop in areas such as augmented reality, robotics and artificial intelligence. Manufacturing is also evolving with digitalisation and new sustainable methods of production. Yet the UK is facing a skills shortage with an annual shortfall of 59,000 engineers.
The challenge for our sectors is to ensure we have enough people with the right skills so that our sectors remain successful in developing innovative technologies and exporting world leading products. In attracting talent, initiatives such as STEM Learning, the Women in Aviation and Aerospace and Defence Charters and the establishment of LGBTQ+ and EMBRACE internal networks contribute to an increasingly inclusive and diverse work culture.
In this Talent Hub we pull together the policy information around skills strategy and highlight opportunities through some of our innovative projects of the future.
