Inmarsat Ltd

Company Profile

Inmarsat (LSE: ISAT.L) is the leading provider of global, mobile satellite communications services.  On land, at sea and in the air, the company serves Government, Commercial and NGO customers on every continent, providing highly reliable broadband data and voice connectivity services in regions where local network connectivity is unreliable or unavailable.

By connecting to one of Inmarsat’s satellites, users can send data or make voice calls while outside the coverage of any terrestrial network.  This vital capability has placed the company at the heart of maritime and aviation safety services across the world, and positioned Inmarsat as the leading mobile satellite connectivity service for merchant shipping, commercial and business air transport, the broadcast media, energy businesses, utilities companies, mining businesses and humanitarian aid agencies – to name but a few.

By the close of 2014, Inmarsat will own and operate a constellation of 13 geostationary (GEO) satellites (Inmarsat has a fleet of 11 GEOs as of 1 Jan 2014), which together with its global ground network forms the backbone of the world’s most versatile and reliable commercial satellite communications network.

Inmarsat’s fleet includes Alphasat (designated Inmarsat-4A F4), the most sophisticated commercial communications satellite ever built1, which was launched in July 2013.  By the end of the year (2014), Inmarsat expects to have launched two further Inmarsat-5 satellites (the first I-5 was launched in December 2013). These high throughput, Ka-band satellites will form the Global Xpress (GX) constellation; a game-changing satellite network which will offer the world’s first globally available, high-speed mobile broadband service.
