Biography:

Lieutenant General Charlie Stickland CB OBE

Lieutenant General Stickland joined the Royal Marines in 1987. His initial Commando and Fleet time saw service across the globe from the High North to the Far East. Like so many of his generation there were multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, with a highlight commanding 42 Commando Group conducting aviation assault and influence operations across the southern provinces of Afghanistan (2008/9).

Staff jobs included time in MOD and back in the Navy, predominantly focusing on Operational Policy roles. On promotion to Brigadier in 2014, Lieutenant General Stickland assumed command of 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines, where he refocused the Formation post-Afghanistan on its Command and amphibious role. Following this, he was appointed Chief Joint Force Operations, commanding the Joint Force Headquarters, leading UK global Non-Discretionary Crisis Response.

Promoted to Major General, he became the Commandant General Royal Marines and Commander UK Amphibious Forces, commanding the European Union’s counter piracy, Operation ATALANTA. Moving on to become Assistant Chief of Defence Staff for Operations & Commitments in the MOD in May 2019 he was intimately involved in all UK Resilience and Overseas operations, notably the national COVID response and Operation PITTING, the UK’s extraction from Afghanistan.

Promoted to Lieutenant General, he assumed his current position as Chief of Joint Operations at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood in November 2021.

Married to Mishy, a lady of unparalleled patience. The Sticklands have three large sons and life revolves around family chaos, skiing and seeking adventure, and doing up their ‘forever house’ in the South Downs National Park.
