Paris Airshow: ADS Welcomes Manufacturers' Commitment to Cut Carbon Emissions

ADS welcomes a joint statement made today by the Chief Technology Officers (CTOs) of seven companies to demonstrate how they are working to drive improvements in aviation sustainability.

Speaking at the 2019 Paris Airshow in Le Bourget, the CTOs from ADS members Airbus, GE Aviation, Rolls Royce, Safran and UTC, plus Boeing and Dassault Aviation, set out the technological elements to sustainable aviation.

Their strategy covers three areas: 

  • Continuing to develop aircraft and engine design and technology to pursue improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.
  • Supporting the commercialisation of sustainable, alternate aviation fuels.
  • Developing radically new aircraft and propulsion technology and accelerating technologies that will enable the third generation of aviation.

ADS Chief Executive Paul Everitt said:

“The UK’s aerospace sector is committed to playing its part in achieving the target of net zero carbon emissions.

“Today’s statement from the Chief Technology Officers at seven of the world’s leading aerospace manufacturers shows how seriously this challenge is being taken and the vital technological development already underway to achieve it.

“The UK has an opportunity to play a leading role in developing and manufacturing this advanced technology that will minimise the environmental impact of aviation.

“To achieve this we must build on our successful Aerospace Industrial Strategy and make sure that our trading arrangements with the European Union and other major international partners support the UK as an attractive destination for new R&D investment.”
