As manufacturers face increasing pressure to improve productivity, adopt new technologies and make smarter investment decisions, the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is advancing the benefits of its Digital Proving Ground (DPG) to reduce risk when taking innovative ideas through to implementation.

The Digital Proving Ground enables manufacturers to accurately replicate real?world operations in a controlled digital setting, allowing them to explore, test and validate new products, processes and technologies before committing to physical change or capital investment. By combining advanced simulation tools, digital twins and a growing library of ready?to?use digital assets, the DPG supports faster, more informed decision?making across the manufacturing lifecycle.
Already in use across a range of industrial applications, the DPG helps manufacturers model factory layouts, trial automation strategies, integrate new software systems and stress?test emerging technologies, all without disrupting live operations. This approach is particularly valuable in complex and highly regulated environments, such as aerospace and defence, while remaining equally applicable across the wider manufacturing sector. By reducing uncertainty and avoiding costly missteps, the DPG accelerates the path from idea to implementation.
A key differentiator of the Digital Proving Ground is its independent, technology?agnostic design, enabling organisations to assess solutions based purely on what works best for their business. Supported by MTC’s world?class engineering expertise, manufacturers gain access to practical insight grounded in real industrial challenges.
The DPG also supports organisations looking to unlock greater value from their data, bringing together information from across operations and supply chains to improve planning, prediction and optimisation. For those exploring artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies, the environment provides a secure space to trial AI?driven monitoring, predictive analytics and cyber?secure production systems before deployment.
The Digital Proving Ground underpins the Digital Manufacturing Accelerator (DMA), the UK’s hub for accelerating the adoption of digital manufacturing technologies. Backed by a £15 million investment by Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, the DMA combines virtual and physical environments to help manufacturers validate and scale digital and automation solutions more quickly and with less risk.
“Many manufacturers know digital technologies can transform their operations, but the risk and uncertainty of getting it wrong can slow progress,” said Dr Hannah Edmonds, Chief Engineer at the Manufacturing Technology Centre. “The Digital Proving Ground gives businesses a practical way to explore what’s possible, test ideas safely and make confident, data?driven decisions before committing investment.”
MTC's DPG and sponsorship of ADS ADVANCE March - May 2026 digital edition
The Manufacturing and Technology Centre is proud to sponsor the ADS ADVANCE March - May 2026 digital edition, reinforcing our long-standing commitment to supporting the UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space sectors. MTC helps organisations bridge the gap between innovation and real-world application - enabling industry to accelerate productivity, de risk investment and turn emerging technologies into commercially valuable solutions.
At the heart of this work is the Digital Proving Ground (DPG) - MTC’s cutting edge virtual environment designed to help manufacturers explore, test and validate new products, processes and technologies without disrupting live production. Built to empower organisations to make smarter, faster and more confident decisions, the DPG provides access to advanced simulation tools, ready to use digital models and MTC’s engineering expertise. This vendor neutral platform allows businesses to replicate their operations digitally, assess options safely, reduce uncertainty and unlock clear, data driven insights before committing to investment.
