Kevin Craven, CEO of ADS Group, welcomes the new Government:
The first day in a new job is a perfect time to make a good impression – for our sectors, Prime Minister Rt Hon Andy Burnham has certainly done that. A decisive sweep of Cabinet appointments overnight is hugely welcome, and we look forward to working closely with the entire ministerial front bench to fully unlock the potential our sectors provide. Of course, there are some appointments that stand out, and it would be hard to find a better outcome for our sectors than Rt Hon John Healey’s appointment as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Having worked with him for many years, we have experienced first hand his diligence, deep commitment to his brief and ability to navigate a challenging circumstances. We look forward to working with him closely on this remit, including, of course, through a clear pathway to deliver 3% of GDP on defence – within those all-important fiscal rules.
Bringing innovation, science and technology together under a new ‘business department’ will help to unlock the commercial potential for the industrial innovations that our sectors are known for. Congratulations to Rt Hon Jonathan Reynolds on his return to an expanded brief – we wholeheartedly look forward to working with him in his new role as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Technology.
Over in Main Building, Rt Hon Wes Streeting’s return to Cabinet as Secretary of State for Defence is a welcome addition. While admittedly less familiar to us at this stage, his experience within the Department for Health and commitment to delivering results through reform could be pivotal.
At this time, we also thank those who are leaving the front bench for their engagement with our sectors. We look forward to continuing to work with you from the backbenches, and beyond.
There are many other familiar faces returning, and we wish them all well. The aerospace, defence, security and space sectors deliver 468,500 jobs throughout the UK, and add £46.8 billion to the UK economy. We look forward to working in partnership with the new government to continue this prosperity mission, unlock innovation, and deliver the UK’s national security.
