TMD Technologies Limited (TMD) is among the world’s leading manufacturers of microwave tubes, high voltage power supplies, and transmitters for Radar, EW, Communications, EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) Radio Frequency testing, and other laboratory applications.

Originally producing microwave tubes (the heart of a radar), TMD expanded their portfolio to produce the power supplies that drove the whole radar transmitter, employing engineers with the expertise to develop power supplies and integrate them with TMD’s and other manufacturers’ tubes. This expertise means that many companies outsource their tube and transmitter production requirements to TMD. TMD’s products are used in life-saving search and rescue radar missions in the USA.

Since 2014, TMD has been a beneficiary of the Sharing in Growth programme. The programme has facilitated a change in the company’s culture, TMD now supports employees through employee engagement surveys every six months, providing opportunities to develop skills such as NVQ courses as well as mentoring.

Sharing in Growth has enabled the company to assess their strategic position, set targets and optimise production and engineering processes; adopting a ‘right first time’ approach to design, development and delivery, improving overall efficiency.

TMD has also undertaken a number of investments: in new plant and equipment; in solar panels to reduce the company’s carbon footprint; and increased spending on Research and Development. The company has also developed a completely new area of their factory and made advances in rapid prototyping.

TMD recently won an £11m order, attributing the support of Sharing in Growth as a key driver to being able to fulfil a contract of this size and complexity, to the highest possible standard.

In August this year, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell visited TMD, where its latest technical product innovations were presented, showcasing a recent surge in trade performance demonstrated by several large new orders (£5m at Farnbortional Airshow).

During the visit John McDonnell said:

“It’s great to see the business doing so well; continuing to make a big contribution to the UK manufacturing industry and UK exports. It’s very important that government continues to provide the appropriate support to allow innovative SMEs such as TMD to flourish.”
