Next up in our showcase of apprentices for National Apprenticeships Week 2022, meet Josie Ready, a Business Apprentice with MBDA.

What made you want to pursue a career in the sector and an apprenticeship?

The concept of gaining unmatched work experience while putting into practice what I was learning at university is what won me over. The daily opportunities for growth and exposure of the real world of work was something I simply could not turn down. My Grandpa was a solider in the war so I have always been interested in the defence sector.

What is your day-to-day role like, has it changed much due to the pandemic?

My daily role changes depending on which placement I am working in, one of the massive benefits of my apprenticeship is no day is the same! I tend to work in the office at least 1-2 days a week and work from home the rest. However, in general I support my manger in their commitments while also contributing to my team by independently working towards personal objectives.

Have you worked on any interesting projects / programs during your apprenticeship?

During the pandemic, I contributed to ‘Project Joule’, which consisted of planning how my company would work after COVID-19. I had the responsibility of researching other similar company’s experiences of virtual working, which we used as a benchmark, thus allowing us to create our own ‘Dynamic Working’ model. I have also taken on the project manager role of ‘Robot Rumble’, which shapes the next generation of engineers!

What has been the best thing about your apprenticeship, has anything surprised you?

I have been overwhelmed by the number of opportunities that are available for apprentices. MBDA provide a variety of experiences to aid my growth and skill development, contributing to my confidence and versatility as an employee. Being treated like an adult and trusted with vast responsibility by my team was a surprise when I first joined, I was used to being treated like a student at school so found it really empowering knowing they believed in me.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to people looking to make a first step in their career?

Definitely! I will always be grateful to myself for taking the opportunity as it has most definitely kick started my career and opened so many doors for my development already. It is the best investment you can make and has been the making of me.

What is your advice to someone who would like to join an apprenticeship scheme?

I would suggest on doing your research into what type of apprenticeship is suitable for your line of work and future career plans. Also, trust in yourself that you can do it. You have to take the risk but it will pay off if you truly commit your all.
