As Ken Doig, ADS Scotland Business Development Manager, steps into retirement, ADS bids farewell to a colleague whose journey through manufacturing, aerospace and defence has been nothing short of remarkable. Ken’s story is one of resilience and relentless dedication. It is a real testament to the power of apprenticeships and the value of lifelong industry experience.

From Apprentice Toolmaker to ADS Scotland

Ken began his career in 1976 as an apprentice toolmaker in central Scotland, crafting press and injection mould tools for a record player manufacturer. When the factory closed, Ken faced the harsh realities of a declining manufacturing sector.

Over the next two decades, Ken’s expertise in plastic injection moulding saw him contribute to leading automotive firms, before transitioning into the defence sector with the Defence Aviation Repair Agency (DARA). There, he applied his technical foundation to the aerospace maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) space, later expanding into business development, PR and marketing.

In July 2024, Ken joined ADS as Scotland’s Business Development Manager. His first week coincided with the Farnborough International Airshow 2024, a fitting introduction to the organisation and its vibrant community. Ken brought with him not only decades of experience but a deep appreciation for ADS’ sectors, having worked for member companies throughout his career.

His tenure at ADS may have been brief, but it was impactful. Ken’s work with SMEs, his contributions to the MRO Special Interest Group, and his support for apprenticeships have left a lasting impression.

ADS extends heartfelt thanks to Ken for his service, insight and unwavering commitment to our sectors. His story reminds us that careers are built not just on skills, but on relationships, adaptability and a passion for progress.

A familiar face: Gary Kerr joins ADS Scotland!

Stepping into the role of Business Development Manager in Scotland, ADS is delighted to welcome a familiar face as Gary Kerr moves across the Irish Sea to join ADS Scotland full time.

A familiar face to some, Gary brings a wealth of industry experience – most recently leading Business Development in our Northern Ireland Office. He is a true expert in strengthening member engagement, delivering impactful events and supporting sector growth across aerospace, defence, security and space.

The unique links between our sectors in Scotland and Northern Ireland mean that this transition will support both Gary’s personal life (and a slightly homesick wife!) as well as our members to collaborate with businesses in the region. From shipbuilding and aerospace to advanced manufacturing and defence innovation, Northern Ireland and Scotland share a proud industrial heritage shaped by resilience, craftsmanship and global ambition.

Both regions are home to thriving SME ecosystems, world-class research institutions and strategic supply chains that underpin the UK’s national capability. By fostering collaboration across borders and building on shared strengths, ADS continues to support regional growth while championing the unique contributions of each community.
