Ahead of the Sustainable Skies World Summit taking place at Farnborough next week, ADS have today launched a new paper, “Charting A Sustainable Future: A vision for net-zero aviation”.

The report was commissioned by ADS’ Sustainable Aerospace Board, and has brought together the leading voices of the aerospace sector to set out how and why aerospace can contribute to the decarbonisation goal for the wider air transport industry.

Presenting a positive vision for the future of aerospace, the paper sets out the role that the aerospace industry plays as a force for good in the global economy, while appreciating the scale of the climate change challenge ahead, and the need to act now.

Decarbonisation of Aviation

2022 will be a pivotal year for the decarbonisation of aviation, and aerospace companies have a critical role in enabling cleaner, greener flying. While the air transport industry as a whole is committed to the challenge, the manufacturers of the aircraft that bring people together from across the globe have a responsibility to design, build and scale the technologies that will drive net zero.

Through researching increased efficiency of current airframe design, development of next generation solutions such as hydrogen and electrification and accelerating the use of sustainable aviation fuel in conventional engines, aerospace companies are rising to the task.Living in a net zero world does not require us to stop flying. By taking significant action now, through investing in the development and adoption of novel technologies and fuels to reduce aviation’s’ climate impact, future generations can continue to enjoy clean air travel and the societal and economic benefits of aviation. This paper sets out how.
