Tim Peake is returning to Farnborough International Airshow. Touching down on Futures Day, he will be participating in a programme of events especially designed to inspire young people from school, colleges and universities.

Peake visited Futures Day at the 2016 Farnborough International Airshow, his first public appearance after returning from the International Space Station and one of several visits he has made to the event. At the show this summer he will be talking to students about working in the space sector, and his personal experience of becoming an astronaut of the European Space Agency and his long-term mission to the International Space Station in 2015/2016.

Futures Day at the Farnborough International Airshow is designed to stimulate and encourage young people aged 11 – 21 into an exciting career in the dynamic sectors of aerospace and defence. Held on the Friday of show week, groups from schools, colleges and universities are able to visit the Farnborough International free of charge. Both the European Space Agency and the UK Space Agency are participating in Futures Day which is supported by the aerospace industry and STEM institutions who, alongside, Tim Peake, will form part of an informative and engaging day.

Tim Peake said:

“Attending Futures Day again will be a huge honour for me. Farnborough International Airshow is a spectacular event and I can say without a doubt that Futures Day is the most important day in the week.

“Being able to see so many enthusiastic students excited and interested in space gives me great confidence in the future of our space industry. I can’t wait to participate again this year where I hope to see even more young people who aspire to be astronauts, scientists and engineers!”

ADS Chief Executive Paul Everitt said:

“Tim Peake made a big impact on everyone who saw him at Farnborough International Airshow in 2016 and it is great news that he will join us again this year for Futures Day.

“His presence will give students the opportunity to hear from a British ESA astronaut who has been into space and who is in a unique position to talk about this country’s contribution to space science and exploration.

“The UK space sector is a real success story that has grown quickly in the past decade and I hope some of those who see Tim Peake at Farnborough in July will be inspired to pursue academic and career choices that take them into this sector in the future.”

Jan Wörner, Director General of the European Space Agency, said:

“Tim is an excellent astronaut, both for his professional capabilities and his personal qualities. He is an excellent ambassador of space in Europe, and we are very pleased that he will represent ESA at Futures Day.”

Dr Graham Turnock, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said:

“Tim Peake’s Principia mission kick-started the largest ever education programme in support of a European Space Agency astronaut, reaching at least 1.6 million children and young people in the UK.

“Tim is a fantastic ambassador for UK space and international collaboration,  and the UK Space Agency continues to use his mission to inspire the next generation to engage with space, science and technology. I’m delighted he’ll be returning to Futures Day.”
