The US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross today confirmed that the US would impose steel and aluminium tariffs on the European Union (EU), Canada and Mexico from midnight tonight. The EU is expected to impose tariffs of its own on the US in response.

Responding to the announcement, ADS Chief Executive Paul Everitt said:

“Tariffs harm global trade, restrict healthy competition and drive up costs for consumers. The UK Government must use all its influence to encourage both US and EU authorities to step back from the introduction of harmful tariff barriers, and should work with UK businesses to minimise the impact of any new tariffs.

“Aerospace is a global industry where tariff-free trade has helped manufacturers to deliver safe, efficient and increasingly clean, technologically advanced aircraft. It is important for the continued growth of the sector around the world that this should continue.”
