This week the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium of businesses which includes ADS members such as Accenture, Arrow Electronics, Airbus, BAE Systems, GKN, Meggitt, Produmax, Rolls-Royce, Smiths, and Thales have produced first new medical ventilator for the purpose of treating people with severe symptoms of COVID-19 in the UK.
The ventilator, the Penlon Prima ESO2, has now gone into mass production with hundreds expected to be ready over the next week and with the hope to up capacity to produce 1,500 a week by May. Penlon would, without the VentilatorChallengeUK consortium, normally only be able to produce 50-60 ventilators a week. After the announcement, the Government confirmed it has now placed an order of 15,000 of the Penlon ventilators.
Dick Elsy, Chief Executive of the Advanced Manufacturing Catapult leading the VentilatorChallenge UK said about the key milestone:
“I’m very pleased to confirm that we have now secured MHRA approval for the Penlon Prima ESO2 device which has been undergoing stringent testing and clinical trials for the last two weeks. Ventilators of this type are complex and critical pieces of medical equipment so ensuring the absolute adherence to regulatory standards and meeting clinical needs were always our priorities.”
ADS members large and small have been key parts of the consortium with the team at Produmax in West Yorkshire assisting with smaller components of the Penlon system.
The team at @produmaxltd are just one of many coming together in this herculean effort to produce these highly technical machines for the #NHS. We are very proud of all the work being done by our consortium members. pic.twitter.com/S8j1w3d1yQ

Airbus has also been working hard to help the effort, helping to build a new production line alongside Siemens at the AMRC in North Wales last week.
Another #ventilator production line being installed by Siemens & @AirbusintheUK this weekend at the AMRC in North Wales. Fantastic work by the @siemensuknews team who successfully designed it all without visiting the space or seeing a physical product #WFH #VentilatorChallengeUK pic.twitter.com/6a5TaQf1uy
