ADVANCE is the official ADS magazine which is circulated physically and digitally to key decision makers in the UK and international aerospace, defence, security & resilience and space sectors.
Featuring a quarterly magazine, online daily news and a weekly newsletter. ADVANCE is editorially independent of ADS and covers the UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space industries and their reach into global markets, providing a platform for all stakeholders to exchange information, from industry and academia, to governments, the military and security forces.
What’s inside the latest issue…
The latest December 2020 – February 2021 issue of ADVANCE is out now and you can read the digital version here.
Inside, as he prepares to step down after eight years at the helm of ADS, Chief Executive Paul Everitt reflects on the events of a tumultuous 2020, dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic, casting an eye to the future and the painful road to recovery that lies ahead. The pandemic has left commercial aviation reeling, so ADS has organised a taskforce to achieve the best possible outcome for the hundreds of UK companies supplying the major commercial aircraft manufacturers. We examine exactly how ADS is underpinning a dedicated UK aerospace supply chain taskforce (ATF) to coordinate support for UK aerospace suppliers.
We also look at the development of more environmentally friendly aircraft propulsion, with a range of new aircraft concepts, sustainable aviation fuels and advanced air mobility systems aimed at eventually achieving zero emissions and talk to Nick Whitney, managing director of Leonardo’s UK helicopter business, who discusses the impact of the pandemic, what the current operating environment looks like and the opportunities available in the foreseeable future.
With new funding rules for Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) programmes approved in September by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), we highlight how aerospace SMEs applying for funding in the next call for national aerospace technology exploitation programme (NATEP) proposals will be eligible for grants of up to 70% of their costs, helping towards developing technology that will position companies for a stronger recovery.
As the UK’s new carrier strike group (CSG) set sail for the first time in late September led by flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth II, marking another huge step in its operational readiness, we reveal the preparations for its first operational cruise in the Spring (CSG21), plus we look at the race to provide it with the vital supply ships required to keep it operational when far away from home.
There is a preview of the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi – still scheduled to go ahead in February despite current COVID-19 restrictions – where there will be a large British contingent supported by ADS and the DTI’s UK Defence & Security Exports (UKDSE), plus we report on a number of UK companies that are working on prototypes of hybrid-electric armoured vehicles for the US and British armed forces.
We also provide an insight into what to expect at the official UK Government global security event Security & Policing 2021, set to take place as an online event between 9th-11th March 2021, which offers the opportunity to meet, network and discuss the latest advances in delivering national security and resilience with UK suppliers, UK Government officials and senior decision makers across law enforcement and security from the UK and overseas.
Following confirmation from the UK Space Agency in late October that Lockheed Martin plans to move its UK Pathfinder launch to the Shetland Space Centre at Lamba Ness on Unst as part of the UK’s spaceflight programme LaunchUK, we consider what it means for Scotland, we evaluate the potential rebirth of the Appledore Shipyard at Bideford in Devon under new ownership, see how passenger protection windows (PPW) can shield passengers by reducing the transmission of COVID-19 droplets coming out through the side of face masks and provide our usual summary of what has been happening across the UK’s aerospace, defence, security and space sectors.
