As Director – Overseas & Exports, Brinley provides help, advice and guidance to British companies on any and all matters relating to doing business overseas. Brinley’s role involves providing assistance on a number of export-related subjects, including;
- Helping companies to understand when they need an export or trade control licence, and how to go about applying for one, and then using it
- How companies can make best use of offset and countertrade to further their commercial activities
- Assisting companies in establishing effective compliance mechanisms and procedures across the broad range of issues which fall under the heading of “business ethics”, including: bribery & corruption, anti-slavery, conflict minerals, etc
Brinley is responsible for a number of ADS Special Interest Groups and committees such as: the Business Ethics Network (BEN); the British Industrial Participation & Offset Group (BIPOG); the Defence Export Virtual Group (DEVG); and the Export Group for Aerospace, Defence & Dual-Use (EGADD).
Brinley also organises export related seminars, conferences and trade missions, and coordinates our market intelligence activities. In particular, he is very involved in organising the annual US Export Control Compliance Workshops, which have taken place annually since 2007, and have rapidly gained an enviable reputation within the compliance community as being both highly informative and also hugely enjoyable.
Since 2004, Brinley has also helped the Global Offset & Countertrade Association to establish the biennial Global Industrial Cooperation Conference as the premier international offset and industrial partnerships event in the global calendar.
Brinley graduated from Sheffield University with a BA in Ancient History & Classical Civilisation. He worked for the DMA in a number of roles from 1986, before being appointed to the position of Exports Director in 1999. In 2009, he became the new organisation’s Director – Overseas & Exports.
Aside from his continuing interest in classical and historical matters, Brinley is regarded by his wife as being excessively interested (to the point of obsession, in her view) in current affairs and travelling.
