Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) held a recent discussion on national aviation climate roadmaps on 14 April 2021. Here a number of different roadmaps were presented by the UK, Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Europe Destination 2050 road maps reviewed.

Some of the key trends emerging on aviation climate policy in 2021, include new taxes, charges and regulations for the industry. A global change to recognising that a 1.5°C maximum temperature rise due to climate change, will become the new de facto standard (previously 2.0°C). As such there are renewed government commitments to net-zero 2050.

ATAG looked at 3 scenarios to reduce CO2/Green House Gasses (GHG)

  1. Scenario 1: pushing technology and operations
  2. Scenario 2: aggressive sustainable fuel deployment
  3. Scenario 3 : aspirational and aggressive technologies perspective

A Europe wide climate roadmap called Destination 2050 has been developed. This considered traffic forecasting, technology developments, operations and infrastructure, sustainable aviation fuels and offsetting/market-based measures. Their analysis indicative that offsetting may not be necessary to achieve aims.

Scenario planning and roadmaps explored

The individual nations have their own unique perspective on road mapping climate change however overall there is general consensus around the methods and predicted outcomes.
