The Romanian airport sector represents a market value of about 600 million Euros, with 9.1 million passengers transiting through 17 airports throughout Romania, marking the height of a period of ongoing growth. Significant growth has been reordered by the emergence of low-cost operators, which in 2008 carried 2.5 million passengers. In 2009, numerous new airlines were attracted on the market, as well as new routes from already existing operators.
One of the most important objectives for Romania is to adhere to the Schengen area in 2011. Consequently, Romania has to implement a set of measures for securing country borders in compliance with Schengen standards, set up the Schengen Information System (directly linked to the EU database), and create the appropriate conditions for the integration in the European joint visa system, for all types of borders, with a special focus on its 17 international airports. Large investment will be directed to projects implemented to comply with EU requirements, with a focus on low carbon sustainable technologies.
Three short presentations were given on their involvement in the airport sector. Please see their presentations below.
